Here we feature an original Syd Mead rendering completed recently for the
Qatar Steel Corp. in response to a request for yet another Syd Mead vision
of the future, this time, specifically for the city of Doha in Qatar.
Personal letter from Syd Mead June 19, 2008
2OO8 has been a busy year full of challenging engagements with clients and
the chance to make new friends all over the world, either via our web page
or actual meetings. Design as an activity embraces the entire range of
imagination whether contributing ideas to game development, motion picture
pre-production, architectural design or simply the exhilaration of personal
discovery. This past year I have enjoyed the time to pursue my own
illustrative ambitions, and been favored with good health and stimulating
friendships. My partner, Roger Servick and I always anticipate the next
invitation for cooperating with agencies, universities and professional
staff groups world-wide. We will glide past the middle of 2OO8 with both of
our birthdays celebrating another trip around the sun, and another year of
satisfying accomplishment. The several projects we are involved in are at
this time confidential, but they will be announced in due time dependent on
professional acknowledgement. I have now been actively involved in
professional design work for over fifty years and still experience the
thrill of that first e-mail, phone call or visit that asks the question;
are you interested in? The answer will always be yes as a first
response matched to subsequent discussion. I envy the youth of the many
aspiring designers that I have the opportunity to meet every year. I wish
them every success, every rebuttal to disappointment and the steady increase
in professional skills and fulfillment of personal ambitions.

Ridley Scott takes another look at Syd Mead
AFI presents an interesting collage of videos of Ridley Scott recapping his work history with Syd Mead on the film Blade Runner. He also admits reviewing Syd's work in preparation for what might be Ridley's next science fiction relation film. Syd and Ridley recently shared the stage on the Warner Brothers backlot screening of Blade Runner for a Q&A session to help benefit Paul's Brain Trust.
